Grade 2M

Notes

It was a great Tuesday in Grade 2!  We started out with our rhyme time activity.  Our word today was bag.  Our spelling word was "investment".  We did a "First," for "How to Call a Duck", and we doodled a duck.

We talked about contractions in language arts.  What is a contraction?  I don't know if I can think of any contractions?  I can not.  I can't.  Wait, maybe I just did!  We did an activity on contractions and talked about checking for understanding when we buddy read.  We did a buddy read and some guided reading groups with Mrs. MacDonald and myself.

After recess we went to Mrs. Hill's room to practice for our Remembrance Day song and we also played a math skip counting game with both classes!  We came back to the room and did a math listening quiz on nickels and dimes.  We talked about grouping money and counting up our 10's before our 5's.  We did a money counting sheet and went outside.

After lunch we had PE with Mrs. MacFarlene.  Was today Tally Tuesday?  Then we went to the computer lab.  We worked on our digital art using the Paint Program.  Did you finish your apple tree on the hill?

We finished off the day in the classroom doing music.  We talked about the difference between singing high and low and singing louder and softer.  We also looked at notes on a staff in music.  I signed everyones agenda and we went home for the day.

Get lots of sleep tonight, dress warm, and I will see you in the morning!

What a great start to the week! We started off the day with our regular opening activitities. Our new word wall word was "what", our Rhyme Time word was "mop", our spelling word was "Assortment", and we did a "First," for "How to trick or treat".

Mrs. MacDonald did a hidden word activity with us. She wrote a message and covered one word in each sentence. We figured out the missing word by asking ourselves 3 questions; "Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?". That strategy can really help us figure out words we dont know when we are reading and come to a new word! We also did a read to self and a write to self activity.

After recess we had math. We worked on counting on from any number by ten. Can you start at 4 and add ten each time? We did a listening quiz on nickels and dimes. We counted money with a friend and reviewed the difference between dollars and cents. How much would two dimes be? How could I write that with a dollar sign? We finished off math with a worksheet on coins and a counting circle.

After lunch we did yoga in PE with Mrs. MacFarlene. I hope you stretched out and felt relaxed. Next we had Art Class. We started our blue prints for our Remembrance Day poster. I said we had to use a 3-4-5 rule. Do you rember what the 3 - 4 - 5 was for?

Vote for Aviva Playground project if you havent already! Get lots of sleep, dress warm, and I will see you tomorrow!

It was a beautiful fall day.  I hope you dressed warm, I found the wind a bit cold today.  Our rhyme time word was "rat", our spelling word was "achievement", our "First," was for "How to be a friend", and we doodled a dinosaur.

Mrs. MacDonald helped us with a shared writing today!  We did a "How to learn what to do in a fire drill".  We looked at our consonant blends in words, and the order of our steps.  We also did a write to self while Mrs. MacDonald and I read with individual students.

After recess we had Make Something that Does Something.  We worked on building a Jenga Tower, making teams, and working with electronic circuits called "Little Bits".  You guys all did a great job!

Following lunch we had PE.  I love the parachute!  What games did you play?  Next we did a desk clean, finished our read aloud chapter book, and did a little science demonstration where we are going to try and grow our own body parts!

We finished of the day with our book of gratitude, signed our agendas, and got ready for home.  Don't forget to vote for the Aviva Project at home! Have a great weekend and I will see you on Monday!

Another great day in Grade 2!  We started off the day with an assembly!  Its Fire Safety week and the local fire department came by to talk to the whole school.  They brought their Fire Gear, prizes, and lots of valuable information.  Are you like a rabbit?  Do you have two ways out of your house and a meeting spot for your family?

After recess we did our opening activities.  Our rhyme time word was "brother", our spelling word was "enforcement", our First was "How to deal with a fire" and we doodled a fire hydrant.  We also managed to go over our counting on strategy in math and get a practice sheet done.

After a beautiful outdoor lunch we had PE in the gym with Mr. Trevors followed by computer.  I was very pleased with all the digital Halloween paintings that got finished!

We finished off the day with Mrs. Sturgeon and guidance.  We went over whole body listening.  We packed one memo in our agenda and I told everyone to sign their own happy face in their agenda!  I will see you in the morning so get lots of sleep and dress warm!

What a beautiful fall day!  We started off our day with a new word wall word "what", we did a rhyming activity with "what".  Our spelling word was "cement" and our "First," was for a story called "How to Make a Pizza".  We doodled an elephant and then had a snack.  Had a snack?

We had a snack before we got on the bus to go to Saint Andrews to watch the Celtic group Rathskallions.  They played some music, invited up some dancers, had lots of instruments, and told some stories.  It was a lot of fun.

We returned to the school just in time for outdoor recess.

After lunch we had gym with Mrs. Hache.  She played a witch game with us.  I think it was because Halloween is coming up, not because she's a witch.

We came back to the class and talked about Fire Safety.  We watched two videos on Fire Safety.  Remember to get your smoke alarms checked.  We have fire drills at school, do you have them at your house?  Do you have a meeting place in front of your house?

We did our book of gratitude, packed a memo in our agenda's, and got our agenda's signed.  At the very end of the day we had a surprise fire drill!  It is fire safety week.

Get lots of rest, dress warm, and I will see you in the morning.

It was nice to be back after a little break, refreshed and ready to learn!  We started off the day with a little change to the routine.  We changed the seating plan and I added another activity to the morning routine changing how our sheets get set up!  This upset some of the keen students who did their sheet already.  The new word for our word wall was "went".  We did a "rhyme time" with went.  How many words can you think of that rhyme with went.  Our spelling word was "complement", and we did a "First," for "How to Dance".  What did you say was the first thing you need to do to dance?  We doodled a turkey.

After recess the two Grade 2 classes got together to look at our Remembrance Day song before math.  In Math we did a listening quiz on nickels and dimes.  We went over sorting nickels and dimes and did an activity where we counted coins.  How are you making out at home counting money?

Today for hot lunch we had Ed's Subs.  Thank you to all the people who volunteer and make that program run and stay sucessful.

After lunch we had PE with Mrs. McFarlene and in computer we worked in Paint to make a Happy Halloween scene. I hope you saved yours to your H drive!

We finished off the day getting our agenda's packed and signed and we wrote in our book of gratitude.  Tomorrow we will be going to Saint Andrews at 9:30 to watch a performance in their gym.  Get lots of sleep tonight, dress warm, and I will see you in the morning!

It was an awesome day in Grade 2 today!  We started off looking at some of the students work on the smartboard and grading it as a class.  How did yours look?  I hope it wasnt covered in marker!   Our spelling word was "calculation", our introduction was for "How to Add", and we doodled a turtle.

Mrs MacDonald was with us again today.  We worked on a "How to" story.  We looked at making a sentence with a topic, and adding details about that topic.  We also did some editing on our own work.  We looked for punctuation, ( . ! ? , ) capitalization, indentation, and some spelling.

After recess we had math.  We counted coins and worked on our counting by 10's and 5's.  When you count handfuls of coins do you sort them first (all the nickels in one pile and dimes in another), group them (2 nickels make 10 and 10's are easier to count), and then count them?  We also played if you can count it - you can keep it.  Mikail won $0.80 because he counted it so quickly!  Great job!  Keep practicing at home.

After lunch we had a large desk clean inside and out.  We also finished a math sheet from the morning.  In PE Mrs. Mcfarlene did some halloween games and we finished off the day with some dance in music.   We got our agenda's signed and called it a day.

Have a great long weekend!  Get lots of rest and I will see you bright and early Tuesday morning.

It was an interesting day today.  I was in the office while Mrs. Hache was away at meetings.  Miss Clarke was in for me.  I got a wonderful report that the class was very well behaved.

Mrs. MacDonald came in and finished up her word work activity for Language Arts and the students also worked on their daily 5 activitites.

In Math we are continuing to count nickels and dimes!  If you have some nickels and dimes at home take out some random numbers of both and see if you can count them correctly.  Remember, sort them (which are nickels and which are dimes), group them (10's are easiest to count by and 2 nickels make 10 cents), and then count!

We finished off the day doing PE, computer, and French.

Get lots of sleep and I will see you in the morning for your last day of school this week!

Can you believe its October already?  We started off our day with our regular routine.  Our new word wall word today was "don't", our spelling word was "contraction", and we doodled a wolf.

We had a guest today, Miss MacDonald who did a fall poem with us!  She helped us with some word work!  We found some missing words and some rhyming words!  We worked on our "cross checking strategy".  Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?  We also got to do a write to self and a read to self.

After recess we had math.  We talked about the the differences between dimes and nickels.  We did a listening quiz and we counted money with a friend.

After lunch we did yoga in PE with Mrs. McFarlene then we did an art and worked on a fall scene with pumpkins and corn stalks.  I posted some of our work in an attachment.  I put them in order of class number.

At the end of the day we packed up the new calendar, fundraising catalog, and the photo orders. I signed the agenda's and we called it a day.  Im in the office tomorrow for Mrs. Hache so Mrs. Clarke will be in my room for me.  Remember how we treat guests!  Get lots of sleep and I will see you in the morning.

What a great day! It was beautiful outside! We started the day setting up our pages and getting out our agenda's. Our spelling word was "treatment", our introduction was "How to Run", and we doodled a wolf. It was a hard doodle!

In math we looked at dimes and nickels. Does the Queen look the same on the back of the all the coins? Why? What does it usually mean if there is a man on the back of your coin?

After recess we had an assembly! I was so pleased when Wyatt won the I-care award and the whole class cheered for him and was more excited for him than if their own name had been called! What a great class! Very classy! We then had time to go back to class and do a read to self or a write to self depending on what you chose.

After lunch we did the Terry Fox Walk. Thank you all for the many generous donations and to the parents and grandparents who came out to walk the track with us! It was a beautiful day for it.

We finished off the day watching a quick video about Terry Fox and doing our Book of Gratitude. What does Gratitude mean? We also got our 8 minutes on the playground as a reward for having more happy faces than sad faces on our scoreboard.

Have a great weekend and I will see you bright and early Monday Morning.

This morning we started off the day with our regular routine.  I know I check the poster everyday and read it out loud to make sure my jobs are done!  Do you?  Our spelling word was "magnificent", we did an introduction for "How to Smile" and we doodled a BB8 from starwars.

In math this morning we reviewed numbers and digits, even and odd, and we looked at dimes!  We also went to the Library to get our pictures taken.

After recess we had language arts and worked on our Daily 5.  We did a read to self, a write to self, and a share.  We also watched the 6 minute movie I Owed the class from yesterday but ran out of time to give them as a reward for GREAT behavior!

After lunch we had PE.  The gym was being used for class pictures so we went outside.  We got our class picture done and the school picture.  We ended up missing computer because of it but it gave us more time to talk about Terry Fox.  We got our agenda's signed and went home (no memo's today).

Tomorrow our end of month assembly is at 10:30 and the Terry Fox Walk around the building is at 12:30.  All are welcome to attend both.  Get lots of sleep and I will see you tomorrow!

TOMORROW IS PICTURE DAY!

Our opening activities today our spelling word was "chocolate", our introduction was for "How to sneeze", and we doodled an elephant.

In language arts we did a writers workshop on the name the new school contest!   We looked at how our introduction for this could be similar to our "How to" stories.  We could ask a question, give an opinion, and have a lead in.  What do you think would be a good name for the new school?  That would be very cool if someday you could tell your own children that you were responsible for their school's name because of something you wrote when you were in grade 2!

In math we reviewed the difference between a digit and a number.  Why is the word value so important?  We also looked at an adding chart, a hundreds chart, and did some math sheets.  I was very pleased with the way everyone chose a responsible choice today when they were done their work.

After lunch we reviewed our thanksgiving trivia.  We didnt get to our Terry Fox story, so we had a game of teacher says before gym.  I had to pull out some major tricks to get people today!

After gym we did French.  We worked on our greetings, numbers, and some friend vocabulary.  Im not very good at speaking French myself, but its important I try!  I know some of us dont feel confident when we speak French, but its important we try.

We packed up our agenda's with a memo and I dismissed everyone (and I forgot to sign them).  Everyone had a great day!   Get lots of rest, bring your smile, and I will see you in the morning!

TOMORROW IS PICTURE DAY!

Our opening activities today we did our spelling word "convection", and introduction for "How to Bake", we doodled an elephant.

In math we started our new unit.  We talked about 2 new words digit and number.  Whats the difference between a digit and a number?  Which one has value?  Does your phone number have value?  We also looked at things that come in groups and that we can count instantly.  We filled in a 100's chart with missing numbers and colored the two digit numbers that were even.  Did you color 100?  Why not?

After recess we had language arts.  We did our daily 5 activities.  We worked on read to self, buddy read, and a write to self.  I read one on one with some students as well.

At lunch today we had pizza for hot lunch.  I keep forgetting that we moved hot lunch to Tuesday's!   Thank you so much to all the parent volunteers that make that program possible!

After lunch we had PE.   I saw sticks and some strange balls in the gym.  After PE we had computer.  We looked at finding files that we had saved to our hard drives last time.

Next we had guidance.  In guidance we talked about whole body listening.  Everyone had a great day so I asked each student to sign a happy face into their own agenda and sign it themselves!  Get lots of sleep and I will see you tomorrow.

Today was a busy day!  We started out our day by jumping on a bus and heading down to Saint Andrews to take a group picture!  Can you believe we will all be in one school next year?

When we came back to the school we did our regular opening routine.  Our spelling word was "consonants", our introduction was for "How to Spell", and we doodled an elephant.

After recess we did a pattern review and a quick pattern test.  Our next unit in math will be on numbers to 100.

After lunch we had yoga in the gym with Ms. McFarlene to help calm everyone down.

Then we had art.  In Art today, instead of cake boss, we did cookie boss.  We iced and decorated our own cookies with sprinkles.  Check out the pictures below!   We finished off the day, I signed the agenda and we packed some memo's before going home.

Thursday this week is school picture day!  Remember to bring your smile for Thursday!  Get lots of sleep tonight and I will see you tomorrow.

It was a busy day today in Grade 2!  We started off with our regular routine.  Our spelling word was "impossible", we did and introduction for "How to Sing", and we doodled a bulldog.

In Language Arts we did our regular daily 5 activities.  We did a round of read to self and several rounds of write to self.  We worked on our identifying the topics of our sentence and adding details about the topic!  If you add a detail not related to the topic it sounds very random.

After recess we had our Make Something That Does Something.  Today we worked on the story of the 3 little pigs.  We made a paper cup pig and a house of paper to protect it.  I was the big bad wolf, but instead of using my lungs I used my electric leaf blower to try and blow the pigs out of the house.  At the beginning of every MSTDS I promise two things; your project will hit problems and life will go on!

After lunch we had PE with Ms McFarlene!  The we came up to the classroom and talked about Thanksgiving.  I explained why the settlers used fish as fertilizer to help their seeds and and crops grow.  I said today we are a bit smarter with our fertilizer and then I was corrected - we grow our food in animal poop!  How is that smarter?

We finished off the day doing a dance for music.  We didnt get to the part where we add music, but I think we have the steps down!  Stay tuned for a video next week to show off our mad polka dance skills!

I hope I see everyone at the pumpkin fling between 1:30 and 2:00 tomorrow to cheer for Ian Baillie!  Have a great weekend!
